HoopsHype.com MVP Race
by HoopsHype / Updated: March 6, 2006

Steve Nash 1. Steve Nash 6-3 PG Phoenix / MVP Week: 2
Statistics: 19.6 ppg, 10.9 apg, 4.3 rpg, 0.81 spg, 49.8 FG%, 92.9 FG%

Has six Sun teammates averaging career highs in scoring. The absence of Amare Stoudemire has not been devastating basically because of his play – arguably better than last season, when he was named Most Valuable Player.

2. LeBron James 6-8 SG Cleveland / MVP Week: 5 / MVP Month: 2
Statistics: 30.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 6.8 apg, 1.54 spg, 47.6 FG%
Incredible player in the first three quarters of the game. Not so much in the last period due to fatigue. He has to do too much for the Cavs.
3. Elton Brand 6-8 PF LA Clippers / MVP Week: 3 / MVP Month: 1
Statistics: 25.8 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 2.8 apg, 2.62 bpg, 52.9 FG%
Arguably the finest season a player has ever had in a Clipper uniform. This was not expected.
4. Kobe Bryant 6-6 SG LA Lakers / MVP Week: 6 / MVP Month: 2
Statistics: 35.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 4.7 apg, 1.78 spg, 44.6 FG%
Has led the Lakers in scoring in all but seven games this season. That says a lot about Kobe – and about the Lakers, too.
5. Dirk Nowitzki 7-0 PF Dallas / MVP Month: 1
Statistics: 25.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.07 bpg, 47.6 FG%
He's surrounded by more talent than any other top MVP candidate – which may hurt his chances to win the Maurice Podoloff trophy.
6. Shawn Marion 6-7 SF Phoenix / MVP Week: 1 / MVP Month: 1
Statistics: 22.1 ppg, 12.3 rpg, 1.95 bpg, 1.89 spg, 51.7 FG%
Putting up big numbers and drawing little attention again this season. Business as usual for the The Matrix.
7. Dwyane Wade 6-4 SG Miami / MVP Week: 2 / MVP Month: 1
Statistics: 27.3 ppg, 6.8 apg, 5.9 rpg, 1.85 spg, 49.6 FG%
The leader of the Heat. Career highs in scoring, rebounds, assists, steals, minutes and field goal percentage. Enough said.
8. Allen Iverson 6-0 PG Philadelphia / MVP Week: 3
Statistics: 33.4 ppg, 7.5 apg, 3.4 rpg, 2.02 spg, 45.3 FG%
The best American player not selected for Team USA among those willing to be part of the squad. Stats-wise, Iverson is having his most remarkable season in the NBA.
9. Tim Duncan 6-11 PF San Antonio
Statistics: 19.1 ppg, 11.6 rpg, 3.0 apg, 2.09 bpg, 48.0 FG%
Bothered by foot problems, Duncan is having his worst regular season to date. Not that the Spurs are struggling because of that.
10. Chauncey Billups 6-3 PG Detroit / MVP Month: 1
Statistics: 19.0 ppg, 8.8 apg, 3.2 rpg, 0.73 spg, 42.8 3P%
Not only is he making big shots and playing tough defense, but he's also proving to be one of the top playmakers in the NBA.
11. Kevin Garnett 6-11 PF Minnesota / MVP Week: 1
Statistics: 21.7 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.37 bpg, 53.0 FG%
The best player in the NBA that we won't see in the playoffs for the second season in a row.
12. Shaquille O'Neal 7-1 C Miami
Statistics: 19.7 ppg, 9.2 rpg, 1.73 bpg, 58.6 FG%
This may be the first year where he ends up not averaging a double-double. Has been looking better and better as of late, though.
13. Paul Pierce 6-6 SG Boston / MVP Week: 1
Statistics: 27.1 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 4.6 apg, 1.47 spg, 47.9 FG%
Pierce is putting up the best numbers of his career, but that won't prevent the Celtics from going to the lottery.
14. Tony Parker 6-2 PG San Antonio / MVP Week: 1
Statistics: 19.3 ppg, 5.8 apg, 1.09 spg, 55.0 FG%
A layup machine. Very difficult to stop when he decides to go to the basket. The first player not named Duncan to lead the Spurs in scoring since 1998.
15. Vince Carter 6-6 SG New Jersey / MVP Week: 1 / MVP Month: 1
Statistics: 23.9 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.21 spg, 43.8 FG%
The top player of the Big Three this season. Has only once scored more than 31 points in a game in the last eight weeks, though.
